he Hellenic American Psychiatric Association, or HAPA, was founded on May 15, 1999 to
provide a professional home for Greek-American psychiatrists in the United States and the
TGreek Diaspora. HAPA is organized for educational, scientific, and charitable purposes in the
public interest, including connecting philhellenes with Greek psychiatry and its international
goals.
Membership consists of psychiatrists and allied mental health professionals in the American
Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Hellenic
Psychiatric Association, and other mental health organizations that share Hellenic roots or a
passion for Hellenistic values. HAPA provides a forum for psychiatrists to share experiences,
establish a network for scientific exchange, facilitate professional development, and advocate for
the mental health needs of individuals, families, and communities.
Specific organizational goals include:
1) The promotion of professional affiliations through the continued study of the Hellenic heritage
of Greek-American, Greek, or Greek-identified psychiatrists who practice in the US, Greece,
Canada, and elsewhere.
2) The promotion of a cooperative relationship with organizations concerned with psychiatric and
psychotherapeutic education, research, and treatment.
3) The identification and advocacy for the mental health needs of Greek-American and Greek
communities.
4) The education of Greek-American and Greek communities on mental health issues and services.
5) The recognition and dissemination (including through funds and awards) of outstanding
service, achievement, or scientific contributions in psychiatry, psychotherapy, and
psychoanalysis by Greek or Greek-identified psychiatrists.
6) The advocacy for the unique needs of psychiatrists of Greek origin.
7) The publication of written materials, conduct of research, and organization of instruction in
psychiatry and psychology.
